Itineraries and trails:

Via Alpina - a trail for Europe

The Hotel Dolomites Inn is located on the Via Alpina and has the "Via Alpina" plaque, received from the Province. Five are the international trails that, developing for over 5,000 kilometers distributed over 340 stages, connect the 8 countries of Alpine Europe, from Trieste to Montecarlo. An ambitious and fascinating project, where, enhancing already existing paths, accessible to the general public and which do not present particular mountaineering difficulties, the alpine landscape offers itself in its spectacularity and magnificence as an environmental, historical, and cultural heritage with a common identity.

The Trentino section, which crosses the Val di Fassa, follows a more than ever spectacular trail from the "Viel del Pan", a panoramic balcony of the Marmolada, then continuing towards the Catinaccio-Rosengarten group. Four are the stages concerning the Val di Fassa, through areas of great naturalistic charm, in the presence of the majestic and imposing Dolomite massifs of Sella, Marmolada, and Catinaccio. Numerous refuges ensure adequate assistance along the various stages.

Routes and walks

Lace up your boots: Val di Fassa awaits you. You will find the perfect itinerary for you, whether you are looking for a simple relaxing walk in the woods or a more challenging trekking route towards the peaks. Our hotel in Canazei is a convenient starting point to discover the beauty of the Dolomites, one step at a time.

  • Valley floor walk: Canazei - Pènt de la Roa - Molin - Alba - Penìa

In Canazei, walk up Strèda de Parèda until you exit the village near the Pènt de la Roa. Before the bridge, turn left onto the paved road (Strèda dò Veisc) that closely follows the course of the Avisio river. The route, mostly flat, features a pleasant alternation of shady woods and open spaces. The walk is well-equipped with tables and benches. About halfway, near a playground area, next to which a small beach has also been created along the stream, a walkway allows you to reach the Ice Stadium.

Continue, exiting onto the provincial road at the entrance to Penìa near the bridge over the Avisio. Return to Canazei by crossing this bridge to the right and descending along the left bank of the stream via Strèda de Dolèda. Pass next to the Ice Stadium and at the end of a short climb, join the state road, returning to the starting point along the pavement.

    • Duration: 2:00 hours
    • Km: 5
  • Easy high-altitude walk: Strada di Rusci (Strada dei Russi) - Val de Sèn Nicolò (Val San Nicolò)

"Strada di Rusci": the name derives from the fact that it was built by Russian prisoners of war during the First World War. Leaving the car in the Saùch car park (paid), walk up the narrow wooded strip that hides the road on the orographic left bank of the valley. The path is varied and alternates between flat sections and climbs that are never strenuous. The latter are easily overcome also thanks to the excellent shade provided by the conifers that accompany the entire route.

When you encounter trail marker n. 641 for lach deLauscel (Lagusel), go left to cross the ruf de Sèn Nicolò via a comfortable walkway, entering the woods again to the left. Descend slightly, emerge into an alluvial stony area, then cross the bed of the Giaf, a stream that can swell dangerously in case of summer storms. For a flat stretch, connect to the dirt road that goes up this last section of Val de Sèn Nicolò. Turn left, descending towards Baita Ciampiè (refreshments, m 1,826) and then continue on the paved road until the Saùch car park.

    • Duration: 2:00 hours
  • Excursion in the side valleys of Fassa: Pas de Sèn Pelegrin (Passo San Pellegrino) - Col Margherita - L Sforcelin (Forcella Vallazza) - Gereburt (Iuribrutto)

Reach Pas de Sèn Pelegrin with your own vehicle, parking it opposite the Hospice (old structure near the church).

On foot, reach the departure point of the Col Margherita cable car, which is located beyond the watershed, in an easterly direction. In a few minutes, the large cabin takes you to Col Margherita, an imposing porphyry spur at an altitude of 2,550 m. From here, take the path that follows the ridge in a westerly direction. On the right, the mountain descends with black pillars onto Val de Sèn Pelegrin, on the left, there is a stony moor (Lastei di Pradazzo) that gently slopes towards Passo Valles. The entire territory is composed of quartz porphyry, an igneous rock used for paving roads and squares. Follow the trend of the watershed, always staying at high altitude, alternating short climbs with slight descents (splendid view on clear days, difficulty in orientation with low clouds). The area presents traces of the First World War. The area crossed belonged to the Italian front.

Here and there you can see ruins of trenches. Having reached Sforcelin (Forcella Vallazza, m 2,521), near the Pradazzo stream, continue for a short stretch up to a junction. Turn right, tackling the steep climb to Gereburt (Cima di Iuribrutto), a desolate plain that drops, to the north, onto Val de Sèn Pelegrin (2.00 hours). From the peak, looking west, the imposing escarpments of Cima Bocche (m 2,745), an Austro-Hungarian stronghold, stand out. Through scree and porphyry boulders, descend to Sforcela grana (Iuribrutto pass, m. 2,389).

Here, take the descending path n. 628 which heads north towards Val de Sèn Pelegrin. Skirt the dark wall of Gereburt and ascend along a narrow path to reach Pas de l'ors (m. 2,267) from which you descend into the homonymous basin among small larches. To the right is the ridge covered in the previous section of the excursion. Continue descending through sparse woods and lush rhododendrons towards Pas de Sèn Pelegrin. On the left, you can glimpse the splendid moraine lake. You then arrive at the pass across a wide meadow.

    • Duration: 3:00 hours
  • High-altitude traverse: Ciampedìe - Rifugio Roda di Vael - Rifugio A. Fronza - Pas da le Coronele (Passo Coronelle) - Gardecia

From Ciampedìe at m 1,998 - reached by cable car from Vich (Vigo) - reach Sela de Ciampac where the Baita Marino Pederiva and Roda di Vael refuges stand at m 2,283 (1.45 hours) along path n. 545 described in excursion n. 01. Continue on the panoramic path (Hirzel-Weg), trail marker n. 549, which with a slight ascent leads to circumvent the southern offshoots of Majarè. Here you find the bronze eagle created in memory of Theodor Christomannos, a Merano doctor of Greek origin, a promoter of tourism development in the Dolomites.

Shortly after, you meet path n. 539 coming from Rifugio Paolina (it can be reached in about 20 minutes), staying at altitude, traverse the west side at the base of Roda de Vael. Witnessing magnificent panoramas, proceed with minimal elevation gain/loss, crossing path n. 551 for Pas del Vaiolon (Passo Vaiolon) and further on finding the confluence of path n. 552 which starts from Rifugio Paolina and runs parallel to our route at a lower altitude. Approach Rifugio A. Fronza (Kölnerhütte) by tackling the final climb towards the refuge located at an altitude of m 2,339 (1.30 hours; 3.15 total). Overcome the rocky prominence behind the refuge and at the junction continue right (to the left leads to Pas Santner - Passo Santner) towards the steep gully that leads to Pas da le Coronele at m 2,630 (1.00 hour; 4.15 total) from where you descend over scree into the barren Davoi basin.

At a crossroads, turn left (path n. 541) and passing slightly downstream of the cyclopean east wall of Ciadenac (Catinaccio) along an easy flat path, reach the road that climbs to the Preuss and Vajolet refuges. Descend to the right into the Gardecia basin (1.15 hours; 5.30 total) and from here to Ciampedìe along a wide and easy track (0.45 hours).

    • Duration: 6:15 hours
